Presidents Update

Presidents Update

Hello Families,

It has been a busy month once again but I hope to keep this report brief.

Open day

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped prepare for Open Day. This is a big undertaking and it was great to see the Preschool looking great and many families braving the weather to come and have a closer look and drop in their 3 year old enrolment forms. It was especially lovely to hear the positive feedback from families visiting our Preschool for the first time.

2018 4 year old program enrolments are open

If you have a child in 3 year old this year, don’t forget you need to put in your enrolment for 4 year old kindergarten via the City of Kingston Central Enrolment Scheme. To download an enrolment form or for more information visit the City of Kingston website or call 1300 653 356. If you have any questions regarding the 4 year old programs or timetable our enrolment officer Sarah, enrolments@elonerapreschool.com.au or educators are more than happy to take any questions.

Music Bingo

I hope you are all brushing up on your musical knowledge for our Music Bingo night, Saturday 3rd June 2017.  Jo and the events team have been busily planning for the night and it is going to a fun social event where you will have the chance to bag an item from the silent auction. Don’t forget to RSVP if you haven’t already. The night is open to families and friends of Elonera Preschool so don’t be shy and come along for what is set to be a great night.

I look forward to seeing you at Music Bingo!

Director’s Update

Director’s Update

Firstly I would like to begin by congratulating the Committee of Management and staff on an extremely successful Open Day, despite the gloomy and wet weather! It was a fantastic day with lots of new families enjoying our amazing kinder grounds and exploring all the different activities on offer. It was lovely to meet new families who look forward to joining our community in the coming year.  Thank-you to all the members of the committee who volunteered their time to set up, pack up, man the BBQ and enrolment desks. All your hard work was greatly appreciated and highlights what a dedicated and committed committee we have representing Elonera.

Thank-you to our Possum Mum’s and Grandma’s for their participation in our Mother’s Day lunch. It was a wonderful experience for the children to be able to share their first fire pit with you. The children enjoyed cooking and baking for the event and we all enjoyed this special time together.  During our preparations for Mother’s Day the children explored drawing pictures of their Mum’s in black and white and then extending a photocopy of this drawing into both a water colour and a collage artwork. It allowed the children to revisit their initial artwork and add further details as they reflected upon the drawing. We have begun to explore the concept of colour and colour mixing with the children. We have enjoyed reading art themed books such as ‘Mix it up’ and ‘Colours’ and have been exploring how to make new colours by mixing the primary colours. This will be a topic that we continue to work on with the children, particularly encouraging and supporting them to be purposeful in the process they use in order to explore and create.

Through our observations of the children engaged in their play we have noted that a number of children are requiring adult support in their fine motor development, particularly when manipulating scissors and writing materials. In order to support these developmental skills we will continue to incorporate experiences that strengthen the children’s small hand muscle strength (including clay, play dough, small construction pieces, threading, pipette painting). We will also incorporate a variety of cutting experiences that will support in children in learning how to hold and manipulate a pair of scissors correctly. In the coming weeks we will introduce our ‘sign in’ sheet for the children so they can practice independently identifying and writing their name when they arrive at kindergarten each morning.

We will also continue to explore a variety of numeracy based experiences that support and extend the children’s exploration of colour recognition, sorting and sequencing, counting and numeral recognition. During the children’s music and movement exploration we have also introduced a variety of action based songs that support their ability to count forwards and backwards.

We have been enjoying a variety of whole group games and experiences as the children explore cooperation, turn taking and performing in front of one another. The children have loved using the stretchy lycra panel to manipulate their bodies to music and it is a wonderful way for the children to work cooperatively in order to move the material together. The children have also taken turns in small groups to perform the song ‘5 cheeky monkeys’ with puppets, and all the children have actively engaged and participated in front of their peers.

The children are enjoying working on the floorbook together and it documents the experiences we have been exploring and the thoughts and ideas of the children about their learning. We hope you enjoy reading this book as much as the children enjoy creating it. The children’s individual portfolios are also located in the foyer area and you are welcome and encouraged to share these with your child at anytime.

Thank-you,

Gina & Lynne.

Kinder Clothing & Outdoor Play

Please ensure that you are sending your child to kinder with the appropriate clothing for the season, as well as a spare change of clothes. As the days get colder and wetter please provide warm clothing – jumpers, jackets, gumboots, waterproof clothes as the kindergarten programs would all still like to be able to provide the children time to explore and play outside regardless of the weather. It is amazing what new experiences the children can explore and discover when the rain begins to fall.

Koala Update

Koala Update

It has been a busy few weeks at in the Koala group with Mothers day celebrations and preparations, a visit from Parkdale Library, an excursion to Parkdale Library, weekly playball sessions, photographs with Cheryl and our weekly Bush Kinder session. The weeks are flying by!

Over the last few weeks we have been exploring identity with the children as one of our group goals for this term is to support the children’s self identity and exploration of who they are, looking at their own strengths, interests, similarities and differences. Last term children were beginning to explore differences and similarities in their own play for example children were exploring how our group has both boys and girls, and that we have differing and similar hair colours amongst the group. Building on from this we are intentionally going to explore children’s identity in a way that each child feels respected and loved for who they are, embracing both similarities and differences. One of the outcomes in the Victorian Early Years Learning Framework is that children have a strong sense of identity, and that this sense of who we are is extremely important. We began exploring our identity in Koala group by reading a book “People” at our mat session. This book explored how individuals throughout the world are unique as stated in the story “Each and every one of us different from all the others. Each one a unique individual in his or her own right.” Following this story we had a talk to the children about the things that they had noticed, and how we might be the same and different in our own group or even in our families. The Victorian Early Years Learning Framework states that “children feel welcome and learn well when professionals respect and acknowledge their unique identity.”   We fostered this sense of respect and comfort so children were able to share differences and similarities and these were embraced. We then had the children each draw a picture of themselves as seen on the wall. During this process they were encouraged to look in the mirror and provoked to think about what makes them who they are.  The children were also asked to tell us about themselves. We supported children when needed, however wanted the children to share what they believed was important about themselves and therefore didn’t have too many guiding questions .We have displayed these on the board without the children’s name and we have also begun reading these out to the children during out mat session, encouraging them to think about who it might be. Through this children are able to explore differences and similarities and we are developing a positive image of each child where one another respects each child for who they are. It has also be a great opportunity to continue learning about each individual child as they enjoying “guessing who” during morning mat time.

The addition of the new water pump has received a lot of attention from the Koala group. The children, despite the chilly weather, have continually sought out this area within their play. We have really enjoyed watching the children being able to use this resource in their own play and have had some great puddles to jump in and mud pits all thanks to the water pump.

Kind Regards,

Ellie and Joanna

Grounds Update

Grounds Update

Grounds Report May

Our fabulous new hand pump is up and running! A huge thanks goes out to Reece Plumbing Caulfield for their generous donation! We still have a bit of finishing works to complete, but it’s great to see the children enjoying the pump.

Through winter, Grounds Duty can be a little uninspiring, but please ensure you record your date and turn up. Many hands make light work!

Mosaic Preparation

For the next stage of our renovations in September, we will be working towards creating a large piece of mosaic art to liven up our entrance way. Please start to collect any old, broken or leftover tiles, china or crockery and mirrors – these can all be used to make mosaics, and the more colours and types we have, the better it will be!

We have put a box in the foyer at kinder to collect your donations. We love to teach our children about recycling and reusing – what better project to teach upcycling!

We will be working with the children throughout term 3 to bring this masterpiece together!

Many thanks for your support

Michelle and Ines (Grounds Team 2017)
